Kimo’s conservative religious upbringing caused him to struggle mightily with the early understanding that he was gay. After coming out, he adopts a shelter dog, Jazz, who becomes his life support as Kimo cares for his ailing father, volunteers with Salt Lake City’s unsheltered community, and co-founds a humanitarian nonprofit for people and their companion animals during times of crisis.
